The Courtyard

History Outside the Museum

Step outside and explore our courtyard, a unique extension of the museum experience. Admire the 1951 Willy's Jeep, a generous donation to the museum. This outdoor space is also home to rotating military vehicle displays and serves as a venue for special events, including cookouts and live music performances.

For Groups and Events

Members of the Arizona National Guard Training Site Command gather in the courtyard at FTMM. These soldiers are responsible for all the Arizona Army National Guard's training sites and ranges, including Florence Military Reservation, Papago Park Military Reservation, and Camp Navajo, which are used for training by all branches of the military service: Army, Air Force, Navy, and Marines (Active and Reserve).

The Armored Humvee: A Modern Icon

Replacing the iconic Jeep, the Humvee, or HMMWV, emerged as a formidable force. Heavily armored to withstand the rigors of modern warfare, particularly in the Middle East, the Humvee became a symbol of American military might and adaptability. Its presence in our courtyard during past events offered a tangible connection to contemporary military history.

1951 M38 Willys Jeep

This 1951 M38 Willys Jeep was restored and donated to the museum by Flagstaff resident Edward Marcus in honor of his father Lester W. Marcus USMC a WW II member of the 6th Marine Division, platoon 629 who saw service in Okinawa and occupation duty in Yokosuka, Japan. The jeep identified by unit markings as a vehicle, of the WW II 158th Regimental Combat Team, represents the museum and distinguished history of the combat team in both the Flagstaff Armed Forces Day and the 4th of July Parades and will see future use in local school visits. Special Thanks to the Marcus Family for this generous donation!
